Furniture Timing for a September 1 Move in Halifax

Halifax moves on one weekend. Leases across the peninsula turn over on September 1, thousands of students arrive within the same fortnight, and every truck, elevator, and delivery slot in the municipality is spoken for at once. Nothing about the furniture is difficult. The calendar is.

Work backward from your key date.

Eight weeks out

Measure the new place if you can get access, or ask the landlord or outgoing tenant for room dimensions and a photo of the staircase. This is when a measurement problem is cheap to solve, because you can still choose different furniture.

Decide what is coming with you and what is not. Getting rid of a sofa in late August in this city is genuinely difficult; in July it is easy.

Six weeks out

Order anything that is not in stock. Special orders and custom upholstery run on a lead time that does not compress for anybody, and a six to twelve week window is normal Special orders generally run six weeks or more, and longer on custom upholstery. If you order a special-order sectional in mid-August for September 1, it will not be there.

Four weeks out

Book the delivery. Delivery slots for the last week of August and the first week of September fill earlier than any other period of the year. Book the elevator at the same time if you are moving into a building that requires it.

Buy the mattress now, even if delivery is later. The mattress is the one item you cannot improvise for a night.

Two weeks out

Confirm everything in writing. Delivery date, window, address, unit number, buzzer code, and whether there is an elevator. Confirm the special order is on schedule rather than assuming it.

Moving week

Expect traffic. Robie, Quinpool, and the bridges are slower than usual, and a delivery window that is generous in June is tight during move-in week. Build slack into the day and do not schedule a delivery for the same three hours as your movers.

If you are already inside four weeks

Buy from stock only. In-stock inventory is the difference between furniture on September 1 and furniture in October. Ask what is physically in the warehouse before you fall in love with a floor model that is a special order.

Prioritise in this order: bed and mattress, seating, a surface to eat at, storage. Everything below the mattress on that list can wait a month without damaging your life.

Ask us what is physically in the warehouse when you come in during August. In-stock is the only thing that matters on this timeline.
