Where Guests Sleep in a One-Bedroom
Your parents are coming for five nights in October. You have a one-bedroom apartment, a living room roughly eleven by fourteen, and a lease that says nothing you install can leave a mark. This is a common enough situation in downtown Halifax that it is worth thinking through properly rather than buying the first sofa bed you sit on.
There are four real options and they fail in different ways.
Sofa bed
The obvious one. It uses furniture you needed anyway, so the guest bed costs you no additional floor space, which in a one-bedroom is the entire argument.
The problem is that a sofa bed is a compromise in both directions. The mechanism sits under the seat cushions, so the sofa is firmer and shallower than a comparable non-convertible one, and the mattress is thin because it has to fold into a cavity. Five nights on one is fine. A guest who visits monthly will start staying at a hotel.
Pay attention to the clearance in front. A pulled-out queen sofa bed will consume most of a small living room, and it needs to clear the coffee table, which means the coffee table needs somewhere to go.
Daybed
A daybed is a twin mattress on a three-sided frame that reads as seating during the day. It gives your guest a proper mattress, which is the single biggest comfort difference in this list, and many have a trundle underneath that pulls out to sleep a second person at floor level.
It also occupies its footprint permanently, and it is unmistakably a bed no matter how many cushions you put on it. In a one-bedroom where the living room is also where you live, that is a real cost. Daybeds work best in an apartment that has an alcove, a wide hallway landing, or a dining area you do not use for dining.
Murphy bed
The best sleep of the four and usually the wrong answer for a renter. A wall bed must be anchored into structural framing to be safe, which means substantial holes and a landlord conversation that most leases will not survive. Freestanding Murphy cabinets exist and avoid the anchoring, at a price and a footprint that competes with a daybed.
If you own the unit, this changes completely and it becomes the strongest option on the list.
A good air mattress and honest expectations
Worth saying plainly, because the furniture answer is not always the right answer. If you host twice a year, a quality self-inflating air bed with a proper internal structure costs a fraction of any of the above, stores in a closet, and disappears entirely for the other 360 days. The reason it has a bad reputation is cheap ones that deflate overnight, not the format.
Buy furniture for a recurring situation. Buy an air mattress for an occasional one. The mistake is buying a sofa bed you sit on daily and sleep on twice, and then living with a firmer sofa for a decade to solve ten nights a year.
Our sofa beds run from about $649 to $1,949; ask about the mattress thickness on any specific model, because it varies more than the price does
Lie down on the sofa bed in the showroom with it opened out. Nobody does this and everybody should.
