Mattress Returns and Exchanges: What Is Realistic
A mattress is one of the hardest things in a furniture store to return, and it helps to know that going in rather than discovering it afterward. This is not a policy quirk. It is a hygiene issue, and it applies almost everywhere.
Once a mattress has been slept on, it cannot be resold as new. That single fact shapes every return policy you will encounter, ours included.
There is no automatic cooling-off period
Consumers often assume a legal right to return a purchase within a set number of days. For an in-store purchase in Nova Scotia, that general right does not exist. Statutory cooling-off periods here are attached to specific contract types, not to retail purchases: five days on a gym or fitness membership, ten on prepaid funeral services, one on a payday loan. A mattress bought in a showroom is not on that list.
Any return window you get on a mattress is store policy, offered voluntarily. It varies enormously between retailers, and it is worth reading before you buy rather than assuming.
Comfort exchange is the thing to ask about
Some retailers offer a comfort exchange: a defined window during which you can swap the mattress for a different firmness, usually once, usually with conditions. Common conditions include a minimum break-in period before you are eligible, a requirement that the mattress be clean and unstained, a mandatory protector purchased at the time of sale, and a fee covering the exchange.
The break-in requirement frustrates people, and it exists for a real reason. A mattress feels different in week four than it does on night two, and most exchanges requested on night two would not have been requested a month later.
Ask these questions before you pay: is there a comfort exchange, how long is the window, what does it cost, does it require a protector, and can it be used more than once. Our terms are set out on the comfort trial page, and the counter staff will walk you through them before you buy rather than after.
Stains end the conversation
Every exchange and warranty programme in this industry voids on staining. Not because a stain affects performance, but because a stained mattress cannot be handled or processed. A protector from day one is the cheapest insurance available on a mattress purchase, and it is the reason most stores require one.
What actually reduces the risk
Spend longer lying on it in the store, in the position you sleep in, with your own pillow if you can. Fifteen minutes on your side tells you more than an hour of sitting on the edge of a dozen mattresses.
Buy the protector. Keep the receipt and the law tag. Understand the exchange terms before the delivery, when you still have options, rather than in week seven when you do not.
Ask us these five questions before you pay rather than after. A straight answer at the counter is the whole point of buying from a store you can walk into.
