Coffee Table Height Should Match Your Sofa
Coffee tables are sold by style and bought by style, and the dimension that decides whether one works is height relative to the sofa it sits in front of. Not height on its own. There is no correct coffee table height in the abstract, only a correct height for your sofa.
The rule is narrow: the table top should sit level with the sofa's seat height, or up to two inches below it. Level reads as intentional. Two inches below reads as relaxed. Four inches below and you are reaching down awkwardly for a mug. Above seat height and the table starts to feel like a barrier.
Measure your sofa's seat height from the floor to the top of the compressed cushion, with someone sitting on it, not to the top of the plumped cushion in the showroom. A deep-seated sofa with soft cushions can lose two inches under load, and that is exactly the two inches you are trying to match.
The other two numbers
Distance from the sofa: fourteen to eighteen inches. Close enough to reach a drink without standing, far enough to walk between the table and the sofa when someone needs to get past. Below fourteen and you are stepping over it. Above eighteen and you lean.
Length: roughly two-thirds the length of the sofa. This one is a proportion guideline rather than a rule, and it is the reason a small table in front of a large sectional looks like a mistake even when everything else is right. On an L-shaped sectional, measure the longer run.
When to break the height rule deliberately
Living rooms in older Halifax flats and subdivided houses are frequently long and narrow, which changes two of these numbers. In a narrow room the two-thirds length rule matters more than the distance rule, because a table that is too short leaves the room reading as a corridor. If the room is small and you want it to feel larger, a table slightly below seat height with an open base and visible floor beneath it does more for the sense of space than any amount of rearranging. Low and light beats correct and solid in a tight room.
If you eat in front of the television regularly, and plenty of households do, a lift-top table that raises to a comfortable eating height solves a real problem that a correctly proportioned low table does not. Accept the mechanism and the extra thickness in exchange.
If you have small children, height matters less than edges. A round or soft-cornered table at any reasonable height is the better choice, and the proportion rules can wait a few years.
