Matching TV Stand Width to Screen Size
A 65-inch television is about 57 inches wide. Nobody puts that number on the box, which is why people buy a 55-inch stand for a 65-inch screen and end up with a television visibly overhanging its furniture on both sides.
Screen size is a diagonal measurement. The width you actually need to plan around is roughly 87 percent of it, before you add the bezel and the feet.
Working widths
| Screen size | Approximate width | Minimum stand width |
|---|---|---|
| 50 in | 44 in | 50 in |
| 55 in | 48 in | 54 in |
| 65 in | 57 in | 63 in |
| 75 in | 66 in | 72 in |
| 85 in | 74 in | 80 in |
The minimum column adds a few inches on each side. That margin is not decorative. Many televisions use two feet placed near the outer edges rather than a central pedestal, and those feet need to land on the surface with something to spare. Check your television's foot spacing specifically, because a wide-foot design on a stand that is technically wide enough can still leave a foot hanging over a rounded edge.
Height matters more than width for comfort
Seated at a sofa, your eye lands somewhere around 40 to 44 inches from the floor. The centre of the screen should be close to that line. Work backward: subtract half the screen height from your eye level, and that is where the top of the stand should sit.
For a 65-inch screen, half the height is about 16 inches, which puts the ideal stand height around 24 to 28 inches. Most media consoles land in that range for exactly this reason. The tall, narrow media towers that look good in photographs put the screen too high, and you spend the evening with your chin up.
One local note on width. In an older Halifax living room with a chimney breast or a bay window, the usable wall is often narrower than the room, and that wall is what limits your screen size rather than your budget. Measure the wall before you choose the television, not after. Check the weight rating as well as the dimensions Our TV stands run about $199 to $292; ask for the weight rating on any specific console.
Bring your screen size and your wall measurement and we will narrow the floor down to the consoles that fit both.
